Resurgence of interest in Ottoman Art is evident all over modern Turkey. whether its Iznik Tiles , ottoman or timurid, hitite or mogul, the mixing up of different interpretations of designs is rampid on souveniers.
Iranian treasures were sourced in Dogubeyazit whilst staying in a hotel with a stunning view of the snow capped mount Ararat. Dogubeyazit is a wild west town where smugglers rule and mafia takes orders from them. Its a sinister place and our 40km proximity from Iranian border gave us an eerie feeling; alcohol, porn and people (in that order) are the smugglers main interests. Climbing the mounts is the only tourism, or to visit the beautiful monestry/palace of Ishak.
Mardin has some of the few remaining metal cobblers left in Eastern Turkey it certainly feels like when this generation is too old to wield the hammer then no body will continue this age old craft. Tin plated copper all hand /eye etched without stencils or measures. The grand bazaar was a major disappointment in this scenic town with its cobble stone and stone walled streets. Full like a $2 shop of Chinese, Indian and Asian wares. Not one Turkish made product available. Is the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul heading this way?
